You’re about to make a four‑figure decision on one clinic’s numbers. For $150 we’ll chart your gums ourselves, take our own X‑rays, and put our number in writing with item numbers — so you’re comparing two real quotes, not one quote and a guess.
This visit doesn’t include a clean. Almost everyone booking it has already had their general clean somewhere else — the above-the-gumline work is done, and what they want checked is the diagnosis and the number. If you also want the clean done, that’s the $250 assessment.
And if the figure sounds familiar: full periodontal charting is valued at $150 in its own right. The second opinion is that charting, priced at exactly what it’s worth. Nothing added on top.
And if the quote you’re holding is right, we’ll tell you exactly that. Walking out with confirmation that your own dentist has it right is a perfectly good outcome for $150.
The $250 assessment, X-rays and clean. It is where the PSR periodontal screening happens — a quick, standardised check around every tooth — and that screening is usually what tells us whether a deep clean is on the table at all.
Plenty of people who arrive expecting a deep clean don’t need one. If the screening comes back clear, the $250 visit is the whole visit and the whole cost, and you leave having had your clean.

At Berala Dental, a complete periodontal deep clean (scaling and root planing) is $400 per quadrant, or $1,600 for the full mouth, all-inclusive, with no hidden fees. How many quadrants need treating — and therefore how many visits you need, from 1 to 4 — decides what you pay. That fee is before any health-fund contribution; your policy may pay something toward periodontal treatment, but the amount is set by your fund, not by us.

Worried it’ll hurt?
Local anaesthetic is used at every cleaning visit — it’s already inside the fee, not an extra. We don’t start until you tell us you’re ready, and we stay with you for the whole appointment.
And the needle? No one likes needles. Us included. So we take our time with it.
What a full course can look like here: three visits, pockets as deep as 8mm treated quadrant by quadrant, maintenance booked for three months after the last one.
Gum disease doesn’t settle on its own. The bone holding a tooth in is lost gradually, and treatment stops the loss where it is rather than rebuilding it.
Caught early it is a clean and better habits at home. Caught late it is damage control. The stage you are at when you walk in decides everything that follows — which is the real reason the number on your quote varies.

What we won’t do is predict your rebate for you. We claim on the spot through HICAPS and we’ll prepare the quote against your specific policy — but what your fund pays is set by your fund.
Why quotes vary so much between clinics
Two reasons. First, severity genuinely differs — one person's deep clean is a single visit, another's is four quadrant-by-quadrant appointments. Second, clinics don't all include the same things in the figure they quote, so the only fair comparison is a like-for-like one. When you compare prices, ask what's in the number. At Berala Dental the initial phase is all-inclusive: full periodontal charting, valued at $150 in its own right, sits inside that fee rather than being added on top, along with the OPG, X-rays, intraoral photos and anaesthetic listed above.

A quote that looks lower may be quoting a different scope, a different stage of disease, or a per-visit figure rather than a course of treatment. Compare the diagnosis and the inclusions, not just the number.
What about after the deep clean?
Gum disease is managed, not just treated once. After your course, most patients move to perio maintenance visits at $400 each — typically every 3 months — and each one includes any relevant X-rays and an updated perio chart. No hidden fees there either. These recalls are just as important as the deep clean itself: they're how the result is kept, not lost. Once things have been stable for around 12 months, most patients step down to bi-annual recalls. The $400 is again quoted before any fund rebate.
Already on 3 or 4‑monthly maintenance somewhere else?
You can move your maintenance across without repeating the deep clean. $400 per appointment — each one includes any relevant X-rays and an updated periodontal chart, so progress keeps being measured rather than assumed. Bring your last chart if you have it.
Berala Dental is a general dental practice with no specialists on site. Dentists and oral health therapists are trained to treat most cases of periodontal disease, and that is where the great majority of gum treatment is properly done. A referral to a periodontist — a dentist with further postgraduate training in gum disease — is considered if the condition has not stabilised after around 12 months of treatment and maintenance, or if it is clearly progressing despite it. Severe cases are referred straight away. The question is always which setting suits your case, never that one clinician is better than another.
Will your health fund help?
Every figure on this page is written as though your fund pays nothing, so nothing on your quote is a surprise. In practice many extras policies do contribute toward periodontal treatment — how much depends on your fund, your level of cover and your remaining annual limits, so it's worth asking them directly. We claim on the spot via HICAPS and are happy to prepare a written quote with item numbers against your specific policy before treatment starts. What we won't do is predict your rebate for you.
One thing worth knowing about extras limits: they reset each year, and unused limit does not carry over. If your policy has a periodontal or dental limit you haven’t touched, it can be put toward treatment — used, it’s value; unused, it lapses.

Common questions
Does a deep clean hurt?
Local anaesthetic is used at every cleaning visit, so the area being worked on is numb. Most people describe pressure and vibration rather than pain. If you feel anything, say so and we stop and top up — there is no reason to sit through discomfort.
How many appointments will I need?
Between one and four, depending on how many quadrants need treating. That is also what decides whether you pay $400 or $1,600, and you are told which before anything starts.
What is the difference between a regular clean and a deep clean?
A regular clean works above the gumline and is one appointment. A deep clean — scaling and root planing — cleans the root surfaces below the gumline under anaesthetic, usually across several visits. They are different procedures, not different intensities of the same one.
What should I expect afterwards?
Gums are often tender for a few days and teeth can be temporarily sensitive to cold as the gum tightens back against the tooth. Brushing and flossing continue, gently, and you are given a home-care plan on the day.
Can I just have one quadrant done?
Yes. Quadrants are priced individually at $400 for exactly that reason, and your charting shows which ones need it.
Do I need a periodontist for this?
Not in most cases. Dentists and oral health therapists are trained to treat most periodontal disease. Berala Dental is a general practice with no specialist on site, and we refer to a periodontist if the condition has not stabilised after around 12 months, if it is clearly progressing, or if the case is severe from the outset.
