Premium, custom-made thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of teeth to change colour and shape.

Before whitening

Are you a candidate for teeth whitening?

Whitening works on healthy, natural teeth, so it starts with a check-up. Untreated decay or gum inflammation needs attention first, because whitening gel on an open cavity or inflamed gums causes pain rather than a brighter smile.

Fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour. If you have visible fillings on your front teeth, they may look darker after whitening, and that is discussed before anything is booked. Heavily grey or deeply stained teeth may respond less, and bonding or veneers may suit them better. Why whitening will not change crowns and fillings →

Step by step

How does teeth whitening work at Berala Dental?

  1. Check-upGums, decay, sensitivity and existing fillings are checked, so the result is predictable.
  2. Choosing the optionIn-chair for one visit, or take-home trays for a gradual change. The quote is written before you decide.
  3. WhiteningIn the chair, the gums and lips are protected before the gel goes on. At home, custom trays hold the gel on the teeth only.
  4. AftercareGo easy on coffee, tea, red wine and dark sauces for the first couple of days. Keep the trays for touch-ups.

Chips, gaps and edges

What is composite bonding, and who is it for?

Composite bonding adds tooth-coloured composite to the surface of a tooth to repair a chip, close a small gap or even out an edge. Because it is added rather than cut away, little or no healthy tooth is removed. A composite veneer takes the same idea further, covering the front of the tooth to change its colour and shape.

Both are $550 per tooth at Berala Dental and are carried out by Dr Mahnaz Khan. They are selected case by case: bonding suits small changes on healthy teeth, and it is honest about its limits, since composite can stain and chip over time and may need polishing or repair. Veneers

When are porcelain veneers the right answer?

Porcelain veneers are premium, custom-made thin shells bonded to the front of the teeth to change their colour and shape. At Berala Dental they are $2,200 per tooth and are provided by Dr Belal Aly, strictly case by case.

Not everyone who asks about veneers needs them. Staining often responds to a professional clean or whitening; chips and small gaps often suit composite bonding. Where teeth are crooked, straightening them first is considered before veneers, because veneers placed over crooked teeth usually mean removing more healthy tooth. Veneers are recommended when the simpler options will not give the result, and the reasons are set out in writing. Veneers and gum health →

Straightening

Can crooked teeth be straightened without braces?

Often, yes. SureSmile is a clear aligner system: a series of removable clear trays, planned digitally, that move the teeth gradually. At Berala Dental it is provided by Dr Belal Aly, case by case, and quoted in writing after an assessment.

Aligners are not right for every bite. Berala Dental does not provide traditional braces, and patients whose teeth need fixed braces are referred to an orthodontist. Why not braces or aligners overseas? →

Berala Dental is a general dental practice with no specialist on site. Cosmetic treatment and SureSmile aligners are provided within general practice, and patients who need an orthodontist or a prosthetist are referred. Cosmetic treatment is for adults.

Things people ask

What do people ask about whitening and veneers?

How much does teeth whitening cost at Berala Dental?

A take-home whitening kit with custom trays is $400 at Berala Dental, and in-chair whitening is $900. Whitening starts with a check-up to make sure the teeth and gums are healthy enough for it. Every figure assumes your health fund contributes nothing.

Will whitening change the colour of my fillings or crowns?

No. Whitening gel lightens natural tooth enamel only. Fillings, crowns and veneers keep their colour, so a filling on a front tooth can look darker after whitening and may need replacing to match. This is checked at the assessment before any whitening is booked.

Does teeth whitening cause sensitivity?

Some temporary sensitivity during or after whitening is common and usually settles within a few days. Gums and lips are protected during in-chair whitening, and the strength and timing of take-home gel can be adjusted if your teeth are sensitive.

How long does teeth whitening last?

It varies from person to person. Coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and how often you have your teeth cleaned all affect how quickly staining returns. Take-home trays can be kept for occasional touch-ups.

How much are veneers at Berala Dental?

Porcelain veneers at Berala Dental are $2,200 per tooth and composite veneers are $550 per tooth. Veneers are recommended strictly case by case, because many people who ask about them are better served by a clean, whitening, bonding or straightening first.

What is SureSmile aligner therapy?

SureSmile is a clear aligner system: a series of removable, clear trays, planned digitally, that move the teeth gradually. At Berala Dental it is provided by Dr Belal Aly, case by case, and quoted after an assessment. Berala Dental does not provide traditional braces and refers patients who need them.

When should I start whitening before a wedding or event?

Booking two to four weeks ahead gives time for the check-up, the whitening itself and any sensitivity to settle before the day. If the event is sooner, call Berala Dental on (02) 9649 6468 and the options are explained honestly.

Getting here

Where do patients travel from for cosmetic dentistry?
