The gentle 6-monthly visit that keeps little teeth healthy and catches problems early.

Bulk-billed under Medicare CDBS* Gentle & friendly A toy to finish
What happens at a kids' check-up and clean?

We gently check every tooth and the gums, remove plaque and calculus (tartar), and take small X-rays only if needed to spot hidden decay. Then we paint on a protective fluoride varnish and finish with a new toothbrush and a toy. It's a calm, friendly visit designed to keep little teeth healthy and catch any problems early.

What to expect

Your child's visit, step by step

Every check-up and clean follows the same calm, friendly routine. We explain each part to your child in words they understand, and there's never any rush.

Step 1 · the look

A friendly check and decay screen

We count and check every tooth and the gums, looking for early signs of decay or anything that needs an eye kept on it. We only take X-rays if needed — for example, to see between teeth that are touching — and you can read more about whether dental X-rays are safe for children.

Step 2 · the clean

A gentle clean — plaque & calculus removed

We gently lift away soft plaque and any hardened calculus (tartar) that brushing at home can't shift. This helps keep the gums healthy and leaves teeth feeling smooth and fresh. It's comfortable, and we go at your child's pace.

Step 3 · the varnish

Fluoride varnish painted on

We paint a thin, protective fluoride varnish onto the teeth. It sets quickly and helps strengthen the enamel — a simple step that gives little teeth extra protection between visits.

Step 4 · the reward

A new toothbrush and a toy

To finish, your child picks a toy from the toy box and takes home a fresh toothbrush. It's a happy way to end the visit — and it helps children look forward to coming back.

About the fluoride

What is fluoride varnish?

We apply a topical fluoride application at 5% fluoride strength — a thin, fast-setting coat painted gently onto the teeth. It helps strengthen enamel and can remineralise very early decay before it becomes a cavity, giving little teeth extra protection between their 6-monthly visits. For cases that need stronger treatment to help remineralise early-stage decay, we use a higher 22,600 ppm fluoride strength instead.

The varnish sets fast and only takes moments to apply. We'll let you know when your child can next eat and drink as usual.

Why a check-up every 6 months matters

Most problems in little teeth start small and silent. Seeing your child every six months lets us catch early decay while it's still tiny — when a dab of fluoride or a small change at home is often all that's needed.

Regular visits prevent the great majority of fillings, crowns and nerve treatment. In short, a quick, friendly check now helps your child avoid bigger, longer appointments later.

What prevention helps your child avoid

  • Most kids fillings — caught early, decay often doesn't reach this stage
  • Stainless steel crowns for heavily decayed molars
  • Baby-tooth nerve treatment (a pulpotomy)
  • Toothache, time off school, and unplanned emergency visits
Medicare CDBS

Is the check-up, clean & fluoride bulk-billed?

Yes — for children who are eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), the check-up, clean and fluoride are bulk-billed, so there's no out-of-pocket cost to you for that treatment. CDBS gives eligible children up to $1,158 in dental benefits over two calendar years, and Medicare pays the clinic directly.

Not sure if your child qualifies? It only takes a moment to find out.

*Eligibility is set by Medicare and changes from time to time. We'll always confirm your child's eligibility with you before treatment.

Parents often ask

Check-up & clean FAQs

How often should my child have a check-up? +

For most children, every six months. Regular visits let us catch early decay while it's tiny and keep your child comfortable with coming to the dentist. Some children at higher risk of decay may be seen a little more often — we'll let you know what suits your child.

Does a clean hurt? +

No — a clean is gentle and most children find it comfortable. We remove soft plaque and any hardened calculus (tartar) at your child's pace, explaining each step as we go. There's never any rush.

At what age should my child have their first visit? +

A good guide is by their first birthday, or when the first teeth appear — early visits are short, friendly and help children feel at home in the chair. You can read more in our guide to your child's first dental visit.

Do you take X-rays, and are they safe for kids? +

We only take X-rays when they're needed — for example, to spot hidden decay between teeth that are touching. Modern dental X-rays use a very low dose. You can read more about whether dental X-rays are safe for children.
