What happens at a children’s check-up and clean?

1. The lookEvery tooth and the gums are counted and checked, looking for early decay. Mirror first, always.
2. X-rays, only if neededSmall X-rays when teeth touch and decay could be hiding between them.
3. The cleanPlaque and tartar are lifted away with the tickle brush and the funny straw, at your child’s pace.
4. Fluoride varnishA thin protective coat is painted on and sets quickly.
5. A toy to finishYour child picks a toy from the toy box and takes home a new toothbrush.

Everything is shown and explained before it happens. Parents stay in the room, and younger children can sit on a lap.

Why six months

Why does a child need a check-up every six months?

Problems in baby teeth start small and silent, and decay spreads through thin baby enamel faster than through adult teeth. A visit every six months finds decay while it is tiny, when fluoride and a change at home are often all that is needed.

Medicare CDBS

Is the children’s check-up bulk-billed under CDBS?

For children eligible for the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule, the check-up, clean, X-rays and fluoride are bulk-billed at Berala Dental: Medicare pays the clinic directly and there is no out-of-pocket cost, up to the $1,158 cap over two calendar years. Children are generally eligible when the family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or certain other government payments.
