What is happy gas for children?

Happy gas is nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen. Your child breathes it through a small, soft hood over the nose, with nothing over the mouth, and within a few minutes most children feel calm, relaxed and a little floaty.

Your child stays awake and can talk throughout. Happy gas does not replace numbing for treatment; it takes the edge off the nerves so the rest of the visit is easier.

Is happy gas safe for children?

Nitrous oxide has been used with children in dentistry for decades. It is always mixed with plenty of oxygen, the dose is adjusted to your child, and breathing is watched throughout. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild, such as feeling a little queasy, and settle once the gas is stopped.

Tell the practice beforehand if your child has a blocked nose, a cold or a breathing condition. A light meal a couple of hours before is usually better than a big one, and you are given instructions when you book.
