Measured, not guessed. Six-point periodontal charting and intraoral photos first, so you see exactly what we see. Then treatment over 1 to 4 visits at $400 a quadrant — without a specialist referral for most cases, without a surprise bill, and without being sold a deep clean you don’t need.

“Will it hurt?” Local anaesthetic at every visit, inside the fee. We don’t start until you say you’re ready.
Six measurements around every tooth. Healthy is 1–3mm. You hear each number as it is taken, then see it again at the recall.
The $250 assessment is the whole visit and the whole cost if you don’t need a deep clean. Holding another clinic’s quote? A $150 second opinion, no clean, our number in writing.
What it costs — actual fees, not a range
Assessment, X-rays & clean. 3 X-rays, OPG for new patients, photos, PSR gum screening, the clean, fluoride. If you don’t need a deep clean, this is the whole visit and the whole cost.
Book the $250 assessment →The deep clean, all-inclusive. OPG, all X-rays, six-point charting , photos, local anaesthetic every visit, home-care plan. 1 to 4 visits.
Book a deep clean →Maintenance. First one 3 to 4 months after your course, then ongoing. X-rays and an updated chart included. Not included in the $1,600 — we tell you that now, not after.
Move your maintenance across →Every fee assumes your health fund pays nothing. Some extras policies contribute toward periodontal treatment and some do not; the amount is set by your fund. Written quote with item numbers before treatment; HICAPS on the spot.
The PSR screening in the $250 visit is what decides it, and plenty of people who expect a deep clean don’t need one. If the screening is clear, you leave with a clean and nothing else is proposed.
Not in most cases. Berala Dental is a general practice with no specialist on site; dentists and oral health therapists treat most gum disease. We refer when bone loss is advanced, grafting is needed, or the condition hasn’t stabilised after around 12 months — and straight away if it is severe from the outset.
We won’t predict it. Your fund sets it. You get item numbers in writing before you commit, so you can ask them directly. Bupa Members First Platinum and nib First Choice members are at a contracted provider.

In plain English
A deep clean — scaling and root planing — removes hardened tartar and bacteria from below the gum line, where a regular scale and polish cannot reach. It is the standard treatment for early to moderate gum disease and is done under local anaesthetic. A regular clean is one appointment above the gum line. A deep clean is a course of treatment below it. That is the whole reason the two are priced differently.
What to expect
We take detailed photos of your teeth and gums using a small intraoral camera. You see exactly what we see — buildup, inflammation, recession, anything we’re concerned about. No guesswork, no jargon, just clear visuals on the screen so you understand the starting point.
We take an OPG and any relevant X-rays (included in your fee) to see the bone levels under your gums, then measure the depth of the pockets between your gums and teeth at six points around every tooth. Healthy pockets are 1–3mm. Anything deeper signals gum disease.
Using current periodontology guidelines we classify your situation by stage (severity, 1 to 4) and grade (rate of progression, A to C). This is so you understand exactly where you sit and what the goal is. Most patients here are stage 1 or 2, which responds well to deep cleaning.
We numb the area with local anaesthetic so it is numb before cleaning starts, then use ultrasonic scalers and fine hand instruments to remove hardened tartar from below the gum line and smooth the root surfaces so plaque has nothing to cling to. Depending on severity this is one longer visit or 2–4 shorter ones.
A deep clean only works long term if home care does too. We walk through your specific risk areas, brushing technique, flossing or interdental brushes, and any habits worth changing. No lectures — practical advice tailored to your mouth.
You come back so we can re-measure your chart, take fresh photos and compare against the baseline. The chart and the photos show whether pockets and bleeding have improved. This visit is a maintenance appointment at $400 — see the fees below.
Honest perspective
Periodontists complete an additional three years of specialty training. They handle the most advanced cases. If a specialist has been recommended to you, that recommendation is usually well-founded.
Berala Dental is a general dental practice with no specialist periodontist on site. Dentists and oral health therapists are trained to treat most periodontal disease. We refer when there is advanced bone loss, recession needing grafting, a complex medical history, or no stabilisation after around 12 months. Severe cases are referred straight away. The question is always which setting suits your case, never that one clinician is better than another.
Health funds

Frequently asked
At Berala Dental a complete periodontal deep clean (scaling and root planing) is $400 per quadrant, or $1,600 for the full mouth, all-inclusive with no hidden fees. That covers your OPG, all relevant X-rays, full periodontal charting, intraoral photos and local anaesthetic at every visit. How many quadrants need treating — and therefore how many visits, from 1 to 4 — decides what you pay. Every figure assumes your health fund contributes nothing.
Not in most cases. Patients with early to moderate gum disease respond well to deep cleaning in a general dental practice. Berala Dental is a general practice with no specialist on site. We refer to a periodontist when there is advanced bone loss, recession needing grafting, a complex medical history, or when the condition has not stabilised after around 12 months of treatment and maintenance. Severe cases are referred straight away.
Local anaesthetic is used at every cleaning visit, so the area is numb before we start. Most people describe pressure and movement rather than pain. Some mild gum tenderness for one to three days afterwards is normal. Happy gas (nitrous oxide) sedation is available for nervous patients.
It depends on severity. A mild case can be done in one 60–90 minute visit. Moderate cases are usually split across two visits, one for each side of the mouth. More involved cases are treated quadrant by quadrant across 3 to 4 visits over a few weeks, allowing each area to settle before the next.
A regular scale and clean works above the gum line on healthy or near-healthy gums, in one appointment. A deep clean goes below the gum line to clean tartar from the root surfaces — necessary once gum disease has allowed the gums to detach slightly from the teeth, creating deeper pockets that trap bacteria. Deep cleans take longer, need anaesthetic, and follow a structured staging protocol.
Every fee quoted assumes your health fund contributes nothing. Some extras policies contribute toward periodontal treatment and some do not toward periodontal treatment and some do not; the amount is set by your fund, your level of cover and your remaining annual limits. Berala Dental is a Bupa Members First Platinum provider and an nib First Choice provider, and claims are processed on the spot through HICAPS.
Most patients need only one course of deep cleaning, followed by maintenance appointments at $400 each, every 3 to 4 months. Once things have been stable for around 12 months most patients step down to bi-annual recalls. Patients with chronic periodontitis may stay on 3 to 4-monthly maintenance long term; this is planned individually from your chart at the recall.
