😌 Happy gas & sedation

Dental fear is real. We get it.

Happy gas (nitrous oxide) sedation for nervous adults and children — judgement-free, gentle, and used only when it's actually needed.

Helping nervous patients across Berala, Auburn, Lidcombe, Regents Park, Granville, Parramatta and Strathfield feel safe at the dentist since 2002.

⭐ No judgement

If you've been avoiding the dentist for years, you're not alone.

Roughly 1 in 7 Australian adults have such severe dental anxiety that they put off appointments — sometimes for years, sometimes decades. We see it every week.

Maybe you had a bad experience as a kid. Maybe you don't like injections. Maybe you've been told off by past dentists for the state of your teeth. We promise: we don't judge, we don't lecture, and we won't rush you.

Our job is to make this whole thing easier than you remember. For some patients that means a slow, gentle approach. For others it means happy gas. Either way, we'll meet you where you are.

Whatever brought you here — welcome back.

If any of this sounds familiar

Common dental fears.

Nervous patients often avoid the dentist for one of these reasons. Recognising it is the first step — we've helped thousands work through each.

💉

Fear of needles

Happy gas takes the edge off before any injection. Many patients don't even feel it.

🔊

The drill sound

Bring headphones. We're happy for you to listen to music or a podcast through treatment.

😰

Past bad experience

Modern dentistry has changed completely. We promise this won't be like what you remember.

😶

Feeling out of control

We use a stop-signal — raise your hand and we pause immediately. You're always in charge.

😔

Embarrassed about teeth

We've seen everything. We don't judge, we don't lecture — we just help you move forward.

😬

Strong gag reflex

Happy gas reduces the gag reflex naturally — for many patients this alone is a game-changer.

How happy gas works

From nervous to relaxed in 5 minutes.

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative gas. You stay awake the whole time, but feel calmer and a little floaty.

1

Comfortable nose mask

A soft mask sits over your nose. You breathe normally — nothing covers your mouth. We start with 100% oxygen so you feel comfortable.

2

Slow gas introduction

Dr Mahnaz slowly introduces the nitrous oxide, adjusting the mix to keep you comfortable. Within 3-5 minutes most patients feel a pleasant, calm, slightly floaty feeling.

3

Treatment, relaxed

Your treatment proceeds while you stay calm. You can talk, signal us if anything's uncomfortable, and we monitor your breathing throughout. Time tends to feel like it passes faster.

4

Pure oxygen recovery

When treatment is finished, we switch you to pure oxygen for 5 minutes. The effects clear completely. You can drive yourself home and return to normal life right away.

What to expect

What does it actually feel like?

Patients describe the happy gas experience differently, but most report some combination of these feelings.

☁️

A pleasant floaty feeling

Like you've had a glass of something — but you're fully alert and in control. Your worries quiet down.

⏱️

Time passes faster

A 45-minute appointment can feel like 15. The dread that usually fills the chair disappears.

🫁

Slightly warm and tingly

Some patients notice a warm, mild tingling feeling in their fingers and toes. It's normal and harmless.

🙂

Sometimes giggly

It's not called "laughing gas" for nothing. Some patients find themselves smiling or quietly amused — totally fine.

🧸 For children

Most kids don't actually need it.

Happy gas is safe for children — but our experience is that most children get through their treatment beautifully without sedation.

We motivate kids gently. We use simple language ("tickle stick" instead of "drill"). We explain everything before doing it. We move at their pace, not ours. We celebrate small wins. Most of our young patients leave proud of themselves.

When happy gas is the right call — for very anxious children, special needs cases, or longer treatments — we use it without hesitation. Either way, the goal is a child who walks out feeling brave, not traumatised.

Safe and proven

Safe, simple, proven for decades.

Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry since 1844 and is one of the most well-studied sedatives in medicine.

🩺

Constantly monitored

We monitor your breathing and oxygen throughout. If anything's off, we adjust immediately.

⚖️

Dose adjustable

The mix is tuned to your comfort, not a fixed dose. If you want less, we give less.

Reversible instantly

Effects stop within minutes when the mask comes off. No lingering grogginess.

🚗

Drive yourself home

No one needs to pick you up. You can return to work or pick up the kids straight away.

📋 Being honest

We only offer happy gas.

Some clinics offer IV sedation or full general anaesthetic for complex anxiety cases. We don't. We've found that for the vast majority of nervous patients, happy gas combined with our gentle pace, clear communication, and judgement-free approach is more than enough.

If your situation truly needs deeper sedation — a complex surgical case, severe phobia, or specific medical needs — we'll tell you honestly and refer you to a sedation specialist. No ego. Just the right care for you.

FAQ

Common questions.

Happy gas is the common name for nitrous oxide — a mild, safe sedative gas mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask over the nose. It helps you feel calm, relaxed, and a little floaty during dental treatment. You stay awake and can still talk to your dentist. The effects wear off within minutes once the mask comes off, so you can drive yourself home and return to normal activities straight away.
Yes — nitrous oxide has been used safely with children in dentistry for decades. That said, our approach with kids is to motivate them through treatment without sedation whenever possible. Most children at Berala Dental have their treatment done with encouragement, gentle pacing, and explanation — not gas. We only use happy gas with a child when it's genuinely needed for their comfort, never as a default.
No. Happy gas is conscious sedation, not sleep dentistry. You stay fully awake and can respond to your dentist throughout. It takes the edge off anxiety and makes time feel like it passes faster, but you don't lose consciousness. Many patients describe it as feeling "pleasantly floaty".
Yes. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off within 5 to 10 minutes once the mask is removed. You can drive yourself home, return to work, or pick up the kids. This is a key advantage of happy gas over deeper sedation methods, which usually require someone to drive you home.
We only offer happy gas (nitrous oxide) at Berala Dental — we don't perform IV sedation or general anaesthetic. If your anxiety or treatment requires deeper sedation, we can discuss this honestly at your consultation and refer you to a sedation specialist when appropriate. For most nervous patients, happy gas combined with our gentle approach is enough.
Sedation at Berala Dental is most often administered by Dr Mahnaz, who uses it regularly with anxious patients and is highly experienced with both adult and paediatric cases. The dose is monitored throughout your treatment and adjusted to keep you comfortable.
Side effects are uncommon and mild when they happen — occasional headache, nausea, or light-headedness, all of which resolve within minutes of stopping the gas. We always start by giving you 100% oxygen and slowly add nitrous oxide until you feel comfortable, monitoring you throughout. Tell your dentist beforehand if you have any respiratory conditions, are pregnant, or take medications for psychiatric conditions.

🗣️We don't lecture

If you've avoided dentists for 10 years, we're not going to shame you. Let's just start.

Nitrous oxide — what it actually is.

'Happy gas' is nitrous oxide — the safest sedative in dentistry. You breathe it through a small nose mask. You stay awake and chatty, but you feel calm, floaty, and time moves fast.

Turn it off → wears off in 5 minutes. You drive yourself home. You eat normally. No grogginess.

It's used on millions of patients a year and has been around for 150 years. Widely used on kids too.

Common questions.

Will nitrous make me say embarrassing things?
Very unlikely — you stay in control of what you say. You just feel calmer. Some patients giggle a bit. You remember the visit, but it feels like a much shorter, less intense version of it. No 'truth serum' effect, no confessions, no stories we'll tell at the Christmas party. Just a calmer you.
Is happy gas safe for kids?
Yes — nitrous is the most widely used paediatric sedation in the world, safe from around age 5+. It's fully reversible (we turn it off and it's gone in 5 minutes), and your child stays awake and chatty throughout. We talk them through what's happening the whole time. Many nervous kids go from needing it every visit to not needing it at all after 2–3 appointments — once they realise the dentist isn't scary.
Can I drive home after nitrous?
Yes — unlike IV sedation or general anaesthetic, nitrous oxide wears off completely within 5 minutes of turning it off. We keep you in the chair for a few minutes, check you're clear, and you drive home normally. You can also eat straight after and go back to work if you want.
I haven't seen a dentist in 10+ years. Are you going to judge me?
No. Seriously. We see this every week — people who had a bad experience as a kid, got embarrassed about the state of their teeth, and then the longer you wait the harder it gets to come in. We don't lecture, we don't guilt-trip, we don't do the 'tut tut' thing. The bravest part was booking this appointment. We'll take it from there, one step at a time.
What if happy gas isn't enough? Do you offer IV sedation?
We don't offer IV sedation in-house, but for severe anxiety or complex procedures we refer you to a specialist sedationist 10 minutes away. They come to our practice (or we work at theirs), you're fully relaxed for the procedure, and we handle the dentistry. We'll assess which option suits you at the consult — for most people, nitrous + a gentle approach is plenty.
Can I bring someone with me?
Absolutely. A partner, a friend, a parent — whoever helps you feel safe. They can sit in the room, hold your hand during the appointment, or wait in reception with you beforehand. For kids, a parent is always welcome in the chair-side seat. Whatever gets you through the door is the right answer.
