What is paediatric dentistry?

Paediatric dentistry is dental care for babies, children and teenagers. It covers prevention, such as check-ups, fluoride and sealants; treatment, such as fillings, crowns on baby teeth and baby-tooth nerve treatment; emergencies; and keeping an eye on how the bite develops.

Does your child need a specialist paediatric dentist?

Usually not. A specialist paediatric dentist is a dentist who has completed several further years of full-time training in children’s dentistry. They do excellent work with children who have complex medical or behavioural needs, or who need treatment under general anaesthetic.

Check-ups, prevention, fillings, stainless steel crowns and most other children’s treatment are provided in general practice. Is children’s dentistry bulk-billed under CDBS?

For children eligible for the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule, check-ups, X-rays, cleans, fissure sealants and fillings are bulk-billed at Berala Dental: Medicare pays the clinic directly and there is no out-of-pocket cost, up to the $1,158 cap over two calendar years. Children are generally eligible when the family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or certain other government payments.

Prevention first

Why do baby teeth need so much care?

Decay can start the moment a tooth appears, and in baby teeth it can reach the nerve quickly. “They’re just baby teeth” is the myth that loses the most teeth: baby teeth hold the space for the adult teeth, and some stay until age 12.

Genetics play a part, but action plays the biggest part. Regular check-ups, fluoride and sealants stop most problems before they need a filling, and a child who is taught that their teeth matter looks after them. Childhood tooth decay starts early →
