When should my child first see an orthodontist?

Most children benefit from a first orthodontic check around age 7, when the early adult teeth and jaw growth start to show how the bite is developing. It doesn't usually mean starting treatment — it's an assessment to spot crowding or bite issues early. At Berala we monitor this at every check-up and refer you to a trusted orthodontist when the timing is right.

Why an early orthodontic assessment helps

Checking your child's bite while their jaw is still growing lets us spot small issues before they become bigger ones. An early look doesn't usually mean braces right away — most often it simply tells us whether to keep watching, or whether it's the right moment to involve an orthodontist.

An early check can help:

  • Spot crowding, bite problems or jaw-growth issues early
  • Make later treatment simpler, shorter and more cost-effective
  • Support a confident, healthy smile as your child grows
Honest about what we offer

What we do at Berala — assess early, refer at the right time

We don't currently provide braces or aligners in-house. What we do is just as important for getting the timing right:

  • Check your child's bite and growth at every routine check-up & clean
  • Explain what we see in plain language, with no pressure
  • Refer you to a trusted local orthodontist at the right time

In-house orthodontics is coming soon. Until then, our focus is watching closely and pointing you to the right care at the right moment.

Did you know? Leading orthodontic guidance suggests a first check-up by about age 7 — usually just an assessment, not treatment.

Ask us about timing and referral at your next visit — we're happy to talk it through.

Children's orthodontics FAQs

At what age should my child see an orthodontist? +

Leading guidance suggests a first orthodontic check around age 7. At that age the early adult teeth and jaw growth start to show how the bite is developing, so it's a good time to spot anything that might need attention later.

Do you do braces at Berala? +

Not yet. We don't currently provide braces or aligners in-house. What we do is assess your child's bite and growth and refer you to a trusted orthodontist when treatment is needed. In-house orthodontics is coming soon.

Does a check at age 7 mean starting treatment? +

Usually not. An early check is mostly an assessment. In many cases the right next step is simply to keep watching as your child grows. It just helps us notice the right moment if treatment does become helpful.

Can you check my child's bite at a normal visit? +

Yes. We look at your child's bite and jaw growth at every routine check-up & clean, and we'll let you know in plain language if anything is worth keeping an eye on.

How do referrals work? +

When we think your child would benefit from an orthodontist, we explain why and connect you with a trusted local specialist. You're welcome to choose your own orthodontist too — we're happy to share what we've seen to help them get started.

Will you tell me if my child needs treatment? +

Yes — clearly and without pressure. If we notice crowding, a bite issue or a jaw-growth concern, we'll talk you through what we see and what the options are, and refer you on if it's the right time.

Wondering about your child's bite or teeth?

Book a check-up and we'll take a gentle look at how your child's bite and jaw are developing — and let you know if and when it's worth seeing an orthodontist.
