What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to take the place of a missing tooth’s root. Over the following months the bone grows onto it, a connector is fitted, and a crown made to match the neighbouring teeth goes on top.

Unlike a bridge, nothing is cut down on the healthy teeth either side. Unlike a denture, an implant is fixed in place rather than taken out at night. Because it replaces the root as well as the tooth, the bone in that spot keeps doing its job.

The implant consultation at Berala Dental is a separate appointment with Dr Belal Aly, and it costs $300. It includes an examination, an OPG X-ray of the whole jaw, a CBCT 3D scan and a written treatment plan with item numbers covering the implant, the crown and anything that needs doing first.

The CBCT scan is the most important part of implant planning. It shows the jawbone in three dimensions: its height and width, and where the nerve and the sinus sit, so the implant is planned around the bone that is actually there rather than estimated from a flat X-ray.

If an implant is not the right answer for your mouth, Dr Belal Aly tells you so, and the written plan sets out the alternative instead. Nothing is booked on the day unless you want it to be; the plan is yours to take away and think over.

Why months rather than one visit? Bone has to grow onto a dental implant before a crown can be loaded onto it, and that cannot be hurried safely. Most of the time is healing rather than appointments, and the written plan sets out the sequence before you commit.

What if there is not enough bone for an implant?

Bone can shrink after a tooth is lost, and grafting is often the answer. A bone graft adds $500 at Berala Dental, taking a single implant to $5,000. Whether you need one is worked out from the OPG and the CBCT scan at the $300 implant consultation, before you commit rather than discovered later.

If there is not enough bone even with a graft, you are told, and the written plan sets out the alternatives.

The honest limitation

Is an implant always the right answer?

No. An implant is one way to replace a missing tooth at Berala Dental, not the only one, and the $300 consultation exists to work out which option suits your mouth rather than to sell one of them.

Keep the tooth

If the tooth is still there and can be saved, a root canal at $1,800–2,200 with a crown at $1,500 (front) or $1,800 (back) keeps your own root in the bone.

A bridge

From $2,200 with Dr Belal Aly, assessed case by case. It fills the gap without surgery, but the teeth either side are prepared to carry it.

A denture

Suits some people, particularly where several teeth are missing. Berala Dental does not make dentures, and refers denture work to a local prosthetist.

Not everyone is a candidate for an implant. Bone volume, gum health and general health all decide whether an implant will hold, and they are assessed from the OPG and the CBCT scan. If the answer is no, you still leave with a plan for the sensible alternative.
