Fissure Sealants — Seal Out Decay, No Drilling

A quick, comfortable coating that shields the deep grooves of back teeth where decay loves to start.

No drilling Bulk-billed under Medicare CDBS* Great for adults too
What is a fissure sealant?

A fissure sealant is a thin protective resin painted into the deep grooves (fissures) on the biting surface of back teeth. It seals out food and bacteria so decay can't start there. Placing it is quick and comfortable — no drilling or needle.

How a fissure sealant is done

Placing a sealant is one of the gentlest things we do. There's no drilling and no needle — just a few simple steps, and your child can eat and drink straight afterwards.

Step 1

Clean & dry the tooth

We gently clean the biting surface and keep the tooth nice and dry, so the sealant bonds well into every groove.

Step 2

Paint on the sealant

We brush the thin protective resin straight into the deep grooves. It flows in and fills them — no drilling, no needle, nothing to remove.

Step 3

Set it with a curing light

A small blue light hardens the sealant in moments, so it's firmly in place before your child leaves the chair.

Step 4

Check the bite

We make sure the tooth meets comfortably when biting, give it a final check, and you're done.

A sealant protects the grooves on top of the tooth — it does not replace brushing or flossing between teeth. Keep up twice-daily brushing and a 6-monthly check-up & clean so we can keep every surface healthy.

Great for adults too

Fissure sealants aren't just for children. Adults with deep grooves in their back teeth — or early signs of wear — can benefit from the same gentle protection. If the grooves on your molars trap food and are hard to clean, a sealant can help keep decay out.

Ask us at your next visit whether sealants are a good fit for your teeth, or for an older child's permanent molars as they come through.

Who often benefits from sealants:

  • Children, soon after their permanent back teeth come through
  • Kids whose baby molars have deep, decay-prone grooves
  • Adults with deep grooves that trap food and are tricky to clean
  • Adults with early signs of wear on the biting surface
  • Anyone who wants to add a layer of decay protection preventively

Are fissure sealants bulk-billed?

Yes — for children who are eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), fissure sealants are bulk-billed, so there's no out-of-pocket cost to you for that treatment. CDBS gives eligible children up to $1,158 in dental benefits over two calendar years, and Medicare pays the clinic directly.

Not sure if your child qualifies? It only takes a moment to find out.

*Eligibility is set by Medicare and changes from time to time. We'll always confirm your child's eligibility with you before treatment.

Parents often ask

Fissure sealant FAQs

Does it hurt? +

No. The sealant is simply painted onto the cleaned biting surface and set with a light. There's no drilling and no needle, so most children find it comfortable and quick.

How long do sealants last? +

Sealants can last several years. They do wear over time, so we check them at every 6-monthly check-up and simply top them up if needed.

Do sealants replace brushing and flossing? +

No. A sealant only protects the grooves on top of the tooth. It does not protect the surfaces between teeth, so it's important to keep up twice-daily brushing and flossing between the teeth.

Can adults get fissure sealants? +

Yes. Adults with deep grooves in their back teeth, or early signs of wear, can benefit from sealants too. Ask us at your next visit whether they're a good fit for you.

At what age are sealants best? +

They're often placed soon after the permanent back teeth come through, so the grooves are protected before decay can start. Deep-grooved baby molars can be sealed too — we'll advise the right timing for your child.

Are fissure sealants bulk-billed under CDBS? +

For eligible children, yes — fissure sealants are bulk-billed under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, with no out-of-pocket cost for that treatment. You can check your child's eligibility in a moment.
