First Visit Without Tears: Helping Anxious Kids at the Dentist

Paediatric Dentistry

How we make first dental visits calm for anxious kids in Sydney — no forced treatment, tell-show-do, happy gas when needed, and a toy at the end.

Some kids bounce into the dental chair like it's a theme park ride. Plenty don't — and if your child is one of the worried ones, you're not doing anything wrong. New room, strange sounds, a stranger looking in their mouth: it's a lot for a small person. The good news is that dental fear in children responds beautifully to the right approach, and those first visits are where it's won or lost.

If your child is nervous about the dentist, let us know and we'll plan the visit around that.

What a first visit looks like with us

Here's what we actually do with a nervous child at Berala Dental — and just as importantly, what we don't:

What parents can do (and avoid)

When a child needs extra help

For genuinely anxious kids, or bigger treatment, happy gas (nitrous oxide) can take the edge off — a light, floaty feeling that wears off within minutes of the mask coming off. And for children with additional needs, we plan tailored, sensory-aware visits at their pace: shorter appointments, the same familiar faces, no rushing.

The cost shouldn't be the barrier

For eligible children, check-ups, cleans and most everyday treatment are bulk-billed under the Medicare CDBS — no out-of-pocket cost for covered services. Check eligibility here or read our plain-English CDBS guide.

We've been the calm first dental visit for Sydney kids since 2002. English, Arabic and Urdu are spoken at our clinic, serving Berala, Auburn, Lidcombe and Sydney's Inner West.

Tell us your child is nervous when you book, so we allow the extra time.
