Is my child eligible for CDBS?

Most Australian children aged 0 to 17 are eligible if their family receives certain government payments (such as Family Tax Benefit Part A) for at least part of the calendar year. How much is covered under CDBS?

Eligible children may receive up to $1,158 in dental care over 2 calendar years (current at FY 2026; source: health.gov.au). The benefit covers examinations, x-rays, cleans, fissure sealants, fillings, extractions, and root canal treatment on baby and adult teeth when clinically required.

Do I have to pay anything for CDBS at Berala Dental?

Accepted Answer

For services that fall within the CDBS schedule and within your child's $1,158 cap, there is no out-of-pocket cost — we bulk-bill Medicare directly. If your child needs treatment that sits beyond the schedule or beyond the cap, we will give you a written quote before any work starts so you can decide.

How often can my child use CDBS?

Accepted Answer

The $1,158 cap applies once per 2 calendar years. Within that window your child can use the benefit across multiple visits — for example, two routine check-ups and a couple of fillings. The 2-year clock counts calendar years, so visits in late one year and early the next still both draw on the same cap.

Question 5

What if my child needs more treatment than the $1,158 covers?

Accepted Answer

We will tell you before the cap is reached and provide a written quote for any additional treatment. You can choose to schedule the extra work later, claim against your private health fund if you have one, or use one of our payment plan options (Afterpay, Humm, or Zip). We will not start any non-CDBS work without your consent.

Does CDBS cover x-rays, fissure sealants, and fillings?

Accepted Answer

Yes — all three are covered when they are clinically needed. Bitewing and periapical x-rays, fissure sealants on the chewing surfaces of back teeth, and tooth-coloured fillings on baby and adult teeth are all part of the CDBS schedule. They are bulk-billed at our clinic, drawing from your child's $1,158 cap.

Does CDBS cover root canal treatment?

Accepted Answer

CDBS covers pulp therapy on baby teeth (pulpotomy and pulpectomy) and some root canal procedures on adult teeth. More complex specialist endodontic work on adult teeth may sit outside the schedule. We will tell you exactly which item numbers apply and what is covered before starting.

Question 8

Does CDBS cover orthodontics or braces?

Accepted Answer

No. Orthodontic treatment — braces, removable plates, clear aligners — is explicitly excluded from CDBS. If your child needs orthodontic assessment we will refer you to a trusted orthodontist for a separate consultation and quote.

Why might Medicare reject a CDBS claim?

Accepted Answer

The most common reasons are: the qualifying family payment lapsed, eligibility was not active on the date of treatment, the $1,158 cap had been used, or details on the Medicare card were out of date. If a claim is rejected we will work with you to identify the cause and, where possible, resubmit it.

Do you bulk-bill emergency dental visits on CDBS?

Yes — for eligible children, emergency treatments that fall within the CDBS schedule are bulk-billed, drawing from the $1,158 cap. If your child has dental pain or a knocked-out tooth, call us on (02) 9649 6468 or visit our emergency dental page. The first 60 minutes matter for knocked-out adult teeth.

Question 11

Is it safe to share my Medicare details through the form?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The form transmits over an encrypted HTTPS connection. Your Medicare details are used only to verify CDBS eligibility through Medicare's Health Professional Online Services (HPOS) portal — the official channel every participating dental provider uses. Details are not shared outside our reception team and are deleted after the check unless your child is being booked in.
