How Much Does Wisdom Tooth Removal Cost? (From $350)

General Dentistry

Wisdom tooth removal cost in Sydney explained: simple removal from $350/tooth at Berala Dental, plus how simple vs surgical pricing works. Book online today.

If you have been told a wisdom tooth needs to come out, the first question is usually about money. At Berala Dental, a simple wisdom tooth removal starts from $350 per tooth. That is the number we lead with so you are not left guessing, and so you can compare us fairly against other clinics across Sydney.

The honest part: not every wisdom tooth is a simple job. Below we explain exactly what changes the price, why "from $350" is a starting point and not a ceiling, and what you should ask any Sydney dentist before you agree to treatment.

Berala Dental's wisdom tooth pricing

We keep our pricing transparent because patients travelling to us from across Sydney, including the Inner West and Western Sydney, deserve to know what they are walking into.

An emergency consultation at our clinic is $80, and a full treatment plan (a separate, more detailed assessment and written plan) is $120. If you only need a simple extraction, you will not be charged for things you do not need.

Simple vs surgical: what actually changes the price

This is the single biggest factor in what wisdom tooth removal costs, so it is worth understanding the difference.

Simple extraction

A simple extraction is for a wisdom tooth that has erupted fully through the gum. The dentist can grip the tooth and ease it out using instruments, with local anaesthetic only. There is no cutting of the gum and no removal of bone. This is the from-$350 scenario.

Surgical extraction

A surgical extraction is needed when the tooth is impacted, partly buried, lying sideways, or has roots that make a straight lift impossible. Here the procedure may involve making a small incision in the gum, sometimes removing a little bone, and occasionally dividing the tooth into pieces so it can come out cleanly. More steps, more time and more skill mean a higher fee, which is why surgical cases are quoted individually.

We assess this from your X-rays before any commitment. You will know whether your case is simple or surgical, and what it will cost, before you decide to go ahead.

Other things that move the cost

Beyond the simple-versus-surgical question, a few factors shift the final figure for any wisdom tooth removal in Sydney:

Honest market context across Sydney

So you can see where we sit, here is the broader Australian picture from published clinic price guides. Simple wisdom tooth extractions generally fall in the region of $200 to $600 per tooth, while surgical removal of an impacted tooth ranges more widely and can run from several hundred dollars to well over a thousand per tooth, depending on complexity. Cases done in hospital under general anaesthetic are higher again once facility and anaesthetist fees are added.

These are market ranges, not our prices, and individual figures vary between clinics. The point is simple: our from-$350 starting fee for a straightforward removal is a fair, transparent number, and we will always quote a surgical case properly rather than surprising you later.

Does Medicare or private health cover it?

Medicare does not cover routine wisdom tooth removal for adults. It only applies in specific, limited situations involving a hospital admission for a medically necessary procedure.

There is one exception worth knowing for families: children and teenagers aged 17 or under may qualify for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) if they have a Medicare card and the family receives an eligible payment such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. CDBS covers extractions done in the chair, bulk-billed with no out-of-pocket cost, up to the scheme's cap of $1,158 over a two-year period starting in 2026. It does not cover anything done in hospital or under general anaesthetic. You can check your child's CDBS eligibility here.

If you have private health insurance with extras (dental) or hospital cover, it may contribute toward the cost. Rebates vary a great deal between funds and policies, so the only reliable way to know your out-of-pocket is to confirm the details directly with your health fund before treatment.

What to ask before you book anywhere

Whether you choose us or another Sydney clinic, ask these questions so there are no surprises:

  1. Is my case simple or surgical, and why?
  2. What is the total fee for my specific situation, in writing?
  3. Will it be done under local anaesthetic in the chair, or somewhere with extra fees?
  4. What does aftercare and any follow-up involve?
