We keep our pricing transparent because patients travelling to us from across Sydney, including the Inner West and Western Sydney, deserve to know what they are walking into.

The principle we work to is straightforward: it is a tooth, wisdom or not. A wisdom tooth is not priced differently from any other tooth. A simple extraction is $350 to $550 and a surgical extraction is $650 to $850, whichever tooth is coming out.

A focused consultation about one specific problem, such as a single painful wisdom tooth, is $80. A full treatment plan — examination, intraoral images, radiographs and a written plan — is $120, or $150 with our principal dentist. Each of those figures is what the treatment costs before your health fund is taken into account; your policy may contribute toward an extraction, the amount is set by your cover rather than by us, and we can put a written quote with item numbers in your hands so you can check it against your fund before you decide. If you only need a simple extraction, you will not be charged for things you do not need.

Simple vs surgical: what actually changes the price

This is the single biggest factor in what wisdom tooth removal costs, so it is worth understanding the difference.

Simple extraction

A simple extraction is for a wisdom tooth that has erupted fully through the gum. The dentist can grip the tooth and ease it out using instruments, with local anaesthetic only. There is no cutting of the gum and no removal of bone. This is the $350 to $550 scenario.

Surgical extraction

A surgical extraction is needed when the tooth is impacted, partly buried, lying sideways, or has roots that make a straight lift impossible. Here the procedure may involve making an incision in the gum, sometimes removing a little bone, and occasionally dividing the tooth into pieces so it can come out cleanly. More steps, more time and more skill mean a higher fee, which is why surgical cases are quoted individually, within the $650 to $850 range.

Other things that move the cost

Beyond the simple-versus-surgical question, a few factors shift the final figure for any wisdom tooth removal in Sydney:

• How many teeth are coming out. Extractions are priced per tooth. Removing more than one in the same appointment means a single anaesthetic and a single recovery, but each tooth is still assessed and quoted on its own.
• Where the roots sit. Root shape, how much bone covers the tooth, and how close the roots run to the nerve in the lower jaw are what decide whether a case is simple or surgical. That is read off the X-ray, not guessed from the outside, which is why an assessment comes before a firm quote.
• Imaging. At Berala Dental the OPG and intraoral X-rays needed to plan an extraction are included in the fee rather than billed on top, so the quoted figure is the figure.
• Sedation. Happy gas is $120 if you would like it. It is entirely optional, and plenty of people have a wisdom tooth removed with local anaesthetic alone.
• Where the treatment is done. Some cases genuinely belong in a hospital setting with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon — a specialist with additional AHPRA registration in surgery of the mouth and jaws. Berala Dental is a general dental practice with no specialists on site, so those cases are referred, and hospital, facility and anaesthetist fees then apply on top of the surgeon's fee.

Cases done in hospital under general anaesthetic are higher again once facility and anaesthetist fees are added.

These are market ranges, not our prices, and individual figures vary between clinics. The point is simple: our from-$350 starting fee for a straightforward removal is a fair, transparent number, and a surgical case is always assessed from the X-ray and quoted individually, in writing, before you decide anything.

Does Medicare or private health cover it?

Medicare does not cover routine wisdom tooth removal for adults. It only applies in specific, limited situations involving a hospital admission for a medically necessary procedure.

There is one exception worth knowing for families: children and teenagers aged 17 or under may qualify for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) if they have a Medicare card and the family receives an eligible payment such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. CDBS covers extractions done in the chair, bulk-billed with no out-of-pocket cost, up to the scheme's cap of $1,158 over a two-year period starting in 2026. If you have private health insurance with extras (dental) or hospital cover, it may contribute toward the cost. Rebates vary a great deal between funds and policies, so the only reliable way to know your out-of-pocket is to confirm the details directly with your health fund before treatment.
