Is Sparkling Water Bad for Your Teeth?

Plain sparkling water is mildly acidic but close to still water. Flavoured versions are the real issue. What the pH numbers actually mean.

Plain unflavoured sparkling water is mildly acidic, but it sits much closer to still water than to soft drink, and for most people it is not a meaningful risk to enamel. The answer changes considerably once the water is flavoured, and that distinction is where almost all of the useful information in this topic lives.

Why is sparkling water acidic at all?

Carbonation works by dissolving carbon dioxide gas into water under pressure. A small proportion of that dissolved gas reacts with the water to form carbonic acid, and that is what gives sparkling water its faint sharpness on the tongue.

Carbonic acid is weak and unstable. It readily converts back to carbon dioxide and water, which is why an open bottle of sparkling water becomes flatter and less sharp over a few hours.

Plain unflavoured sparkling water typically measures somewhere around pH 5 to 6. Still tap water in most of Sydney sits close to neutral, around pH 7.

Is pH 5 to 6 enough to damage enamel?

Enamel begins to demineralise below about pH 5.5, so plain sparkling water straddles that threshold rather than sitting well below it. That sounds alarming stated on its own, and it is why the topic generates so many worried headlines.

The number that matters more here is titratable acidity: how much acid is actually present, rather than how acidic the liquid reads at one moment. Carbonic acid is present in very small quantities and is weak, so saliva neutralises it quickly — typically within a couple of minutes of swallowing.

The practical variables in any acid exposure are how acidic the drink is, how long it stays in contact with the teeth, how often it is consumed, and how much saliva is available to buffer it. Frequency and contact time matter more than total volume. Plain sparkling water scores mildly on the first variable and, for most drinking patterns, harmlessly on the rest.

What about flavoured sparkling water?

This is the distinction that changes everything, and it is routinely lost when people talk about sparkling water as a single category.

Flavoured sparkling waters usually contain added acid. Citric acid is the common one, and it may also appear on the label simply as natural flavours or flavouring, since fruit flavourings are themselves acidic. Once that is in the can, the pH commonly falls to around 3.

At pH 3 the drink is in soft-drink territory. It is roughly a hundred times more acidic than a plain sparkling water at pH 5, and it carries a much higher acid load for saliva to neutralise.

Citric acid also chelates calcium, meaning it binds calcium ions and holds them in solution. That allows it to keep drawing mineral from the enamel surface after the pH has recovered, and to reduce the calcium saliva has available for repair.

A flavoured sparkling water with no sugar and no kilojoules is still a genuinely acidic drink. Removing the sugar removes the decay risk. It does not touch the erosion risk.

Does adding lemon or lime at home do the same thing?

Yes, and often more so. A wedge of lemon or lime squeezed into a glass adds citric acid directly, and undiluted citrus juice sits around pH 2 to 2.5.

The dilution in a full glass softens that considerably, but the acid is real and the habit is usually daily. A slice of lemon in sparkling water at a desk, topped up through the morning, is a materially different exposure from plain sparkling water drunk with lunch.

Cucumber, mint and berries do not carry the same acid load. If the appeal is flavour rather than sourness, those are lower-risk additions.

What about tonic water and sparkling mineral water?

Tonic water is not a sparkling water in this sense. It generally contains citric acid and, unless labelled otherwise, sugar as well, which places it much closer to soft drink than to plain carbonated water.

Sparkling mineral waters vary. Some are naturally carbonated and unflavoured, and some have citric acid or flavouring added. The label is the only reliable guide, and the ingredients list rather than the front of the bottle.

Mineral content also differs between waters, and this cuts in a helpful direction. Waters with a higher naturally occurring calcium content are less erosive, because a solution already carrying calcium has less capacity to pull further calcium out of enamel.

Why does sipping matter more than the drink itself?

Contact time and frequency are the variables that most often decide whether a mildly acidic drink causes a problem.

A glass of sparkling water drunk with a meal produces one short exposure, during which chewing has already raised saliva flow substantially. Saliva returns the mouth to neutral quickly and remineralisation proceeds unhindered.

The same volume sipped from a bottle on a desk across four hours produces something quite different: dozens of small exposures, each restarting the clock before saliva has finished recovering from the last. The mouth never gets a clear run at repair.

This is the single behavioural change worth making, and it applies to every acidic drink rather than just this one.

What did the research actually show?

People often cite laboratory studies showing that carbonated water erodes enamel. It is worth being precise about what those studies did.

Most are in-vitro: extracted teeth or enamel blocks immersed continuously in the liquid, sometimes for hours or days at a time. Under those conditions even quite weak acids produce measurable mineral loss, and the results are real.

What they are not is a model of drinking. A mouth has saliva flowing constantly, a protective protein pellicle on the tooth surface, and exposures lasting seconds rather than hours. Continuous immersion removes all three of those protections at once.

The honest position is that these studies demonstrate carbonated water has some erosive potential, and they overstate how much of that potential is realised in normal use. They are a limitation to acknowledge rather than a finding to dismiss.

Studies that have compared plain carbonated water against still water in more realistic conditions have generally found the difference small — and the difference between plain and flavoured versions much larger.

What is the practical guidance?

There is no reason for someone drinking plain sparkling water to give it up on dental grounds. Replacing sugary soft drink with plain sparkling water is a clear net gain for teeth, and that trade should not be discouraged by an overstated warning.

Does a straw help?

A straw makes a measurable difference for genuinely acidic drinks by reducing how much liquid washes across the front teeth. For plain sparkling water it is unnecessary.

The value in this question is precision rather than reassurance. Plain sparkling water is fine for most people. Flavoured sparkling water, sipped all day, is not the same drink and should not be treated as one.
