Wisdom Teeth Recovery: A Practical Guide and Planning Time Off Work

General Dentistry

Planning wisdom teeth recovery in Sydney? How many days off work to book, soft foods to stock, and how to set up a smooth recovery. English, Arabic, Urdu.

The hardest part of wisdom teeth removal is often the part nobody plans for: the few days afterwards, when you would much rather be resting than answering emails or standing behind a counter. A little planning before the appointment makes that stretch far smoother. This is a practical guide to organising your time off, your food and your home so recovery is as calm as possible. It is general planning information only, not clinical advice, and you should always follow the specific aftercare instructions your dentist gives you.

How much time off should you plan for?

Recovery varies a lot from person to person and depends on how many teeth are removed and how they sat in the jaw. As a general guide, the Australian Government-funded health advice service healthdirect notes that most people go home the same day, that the wound should be left alone for the first day or two, that you may need up to a week off work, and that most people can return to normal activities within about a week. Many people feel up to lighter routines sooner than that.

A sensible way to plan time off work is to think in tiers rather than a single magic number:

If you are unsure, plan for more time than you think you need. It is much easier to return early because you feel good than to drag yourself through a shift you weren't ready for. Patients travel to us from across Sydney, including the Inner West and Western Sydney, and the most common regret we hear is booking the appointment with no recovery breathing room at all.

The general recovery timeline at a glance

Everyone heals differently, but a typical pattern looks something like this:

Treat these as rough signposts, not a schedule to push yourself against. Your dentist will tell you what is normal for your situation and what to watch for.

Stock your kitchen before the day

The single best thing you can do the day before is a soft-food shop, so you are not standing at a fridge wondering what you can eat. Cool and soft is the theme for the first day or two. Good things to have on hand include:

As comfort returns over the following days, you can gradually move back toward firmer foods. A couple of practical notes: your dentist may ask you to avoid things like straws in the early days, and it is wise to steer clear of very crunchy, crumbly, spicy or seedy foods while things settle. Your own dentist's aftercare guidance always comes first, so follow what you are given.

Set up your home to actually rest

Rest does more of the work than people expect, so make resting the easy option:

Planning around family and CDBS for younger patients

If you are organising removal for a teenager, the planning is similar but built around school rather than work, with a quiet weekend often the easiest window. Eligible children and teens aged 0 to 17 may have certain dental services bulk-billed through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which provides up to $1,158 per eligible child over a two-year period for periods starting in 2026. Two things to keep in mind: whether a specific procedure is covered depends on your circumstances, and treatment in hospital or under general anaesthetic is not covered by the CDBS. You can check your child's CDBS eligibility before you book.
